Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about coaching, team duties, registrations, kits and training.

Player Information

Can a player play up an age group?

As a general rule, players should play in their own age group. That is the standard structure across Football Australia, Football NSW and MFA, with playing up considered only in limited circumstances rather than as a default choice. At GHFC, any request to play up is only considered where there is a genuine football development reason and is reviewed case by case by the club with the player and parents, not by individual coaches.

When are kids graded? (Divisions)

Grading for competition age groups, generally U13 to U18, takes place during the club’s announced trial period. Players are assessed across core football elements and placed into the most suitable squad or division for their development and competition level.

MiniRoos age groups, generally U6 to U12, focus more on participation, learning and balanced team formation rather than formal grading.

Coaching and Team Roles

What are the Responsibilities of a Coach and Manager?

Coach: Plans and delivers safe, structured training, develops players using age-appropriate frameworks, sets match day squads, communicates expectations and upholds the GHFC Code of Conduct. Working with Children Check compliance is required for youth teams.

Team Manager: Handles team communications, match day sheet and ID checks, referee liaison, jersey numbers, and coordinates rostered duties such as canteen, ground official and field set-up or pack-up. Managers support the coach and ensure players and families receive club updates.

Do I have to assist with Team Duties?

Yes. GHFC is a community club and all families are expected to assist with rostered duties such as field set-up, field pack-up, canteen and ground official responsibilities. This helps match days run safely, fairly and smoothly for everyone.

How are Coaches and Managers allocated?

For Competition Team, the club appoints coaches and managers after trials and expressions of interest are complete. Appointments consider qualifications, Working with Children compliance, experience and the needs of each squad. Team officials are then confirmed and communicated with team lists.

For Ages 12 and below, parents are asked to step into a Coaching and Manager role to assist with training and communications with the teams. The club supports coaches with training on how to coach before and during the season. Our coaching and player development framework and guides are also provided.

What Support does GHFC provide to Coaches?

GHFC invests in coaching development through model session plans, mentoring and opportunities to undertake Foundations of Football and C Diploma courses. Coaches are supported throughout the season by the football operations team, with a strong focus on player development and structured learning.

Registrations, Training and Match Day

Do I need to pay for Referee Fees?

No. Match referee fees are managed at club level and are included within the published season fees for registered players. Teams and parents should not pay referees in cash on match day.

Do I need to purchase kits (jersey, shorts, socks)?

Jerseys, shorts and socks are purchased through the GHFC canteen (unless sponsored). Training gear is recommended and available through the club shop.

When is training allocated?

Training days and times are allocated once squads and coaches are confirmed and field availability has been finalised. Your Team Manager will communicate the final schedule before the season starts. Training sessions typically run on weekday evenings.

When are the fields available to train?

Fields are available during the sanctioned pre-season and in-season periods, subject to council approval and weather conditions. GHFC coordinates allocations across home grounds and shares space as fairly as possible across teams. Please train only in your allocated time slot and area.
